Experimentation + Daily Blogs

Experimentation

ISO Camera

In the environment I was filming in It was darker than I expected it to be. This meant I needed to experiment with the ISO settings on the camera. I had to put the ISO settings onto manual so that I could change and play about with the settings so I could get the lighting.

Since it was dark in the location that I film at I need to change the ISO. So, what I decided to do was to turn up the ISO so that I could improve the lighting of the picture.

But have it just light enough so that the characters still had that shady and suspicious edge onto themselves. The main reasons for this was so that the characters would be allowed some sort of mystery behind them. Another reason for changing the ISO to fit my image was to eliminate any other parts of the room not needed. As it would take attention off the main characters and draw the audience into looking at different things.

Editing
For my editing at the beginning of my film I originally had a wipe edit between the first two clips. I decided not to do that as when I watched it back the wipe did not look good within them clips so I decided to try and fit it elsewhere.

So instead of a wipe edit I decided to put a Jump cut in between these clips. It looked a lot better as it had a positive effect on the audience. The jump cut I used made the audience feel suspense and tension.  I also decided to change the colour of the image for effect.

I decided to use long and short takes. This was effective in my editing experimentation as it helped me understand what I need to do next to make the movie look good. Then as another part of effect and experimentation I decided to flip the colourful image.

Non Continuity Edit

Non- Continuity Edit

This is my Non-Contunity Edit

For my Non-Continuity edit I did not really change much in the way of making it non- continuity. The only thing I really changed in the film was putting the ending at the start. I decided that I wanted/needed to do that so I could make this Edit, Non-Continuity.

The purpose of this film was to engage and interest the target audience.  Secondly another purpose of this film is to leave the audience stunned and confused. This is effective in many different ways. One of these ways is that it gets them on the edge of their seats. This will make them want to know what happens in the rest of the film. This is why I decided to put the ending at the beginning. This is where the confusing emotions comes into play and the concept of the movie is playing with the audience’s mind. They will want to know why it starts off like but as the film progresses the audience will understand. They will understand that the films provide more effects and emotions if they watch the whole thing.

I decided to have a jump cut take place at the start of the film. The jump cut took place from the just after the first clip of the movie. It jumps from the ending to a panning shot of a character’s pocket watch. Long takes were taken within my movie as it showed the audience what was going on within that specific scene or shot. This is effective as some long takes makes the viewer want to keep interest and grasps their attention. Long takes slows the tempo of the movie down and builds suspense for a very dramatic scene/shot about to happen.
Short takes are used also as they are very effective as well. They are effective as they are snappier and shorter which shows tension and gives a little cliff-hanger off to the audience. Shorter takes will make the audience feel emotion and interacts with their interest it makes them create questions such as “why did that happen?” “How did this happen?” “what is going to happen next?” etc. so it does make the audience question as well as wonder.

Different sounds which I have included is effective in different ways also. Diegetic sounds that are effective are the door opening and closing. This is effective as it makes the audience wonder who is about to enter and it also makes the actors react which also adds a little bit of drama to the situation as they don’t know who it is either. Another diegetic sound added in is a gulping noise. This is effective as it shows the audience what he character is doing.

AFFILLIATION + Final evaluation

Final evaluation

I had many different purposes of my project. my main purpose of the project is to create shock and suspense towards the end of the movie. This is because all the way through the movie you only really get to know three characters. Which is Pete, Benjamin and spencer. But you do hear these characters talking about other gang members. The shock of the movie is that one of the main characters of the film gets killed off. The genre of the film is Crime- Fiction. The target audience of the film is 15-20-year old’s. This is because there is a little violence and many different kinds of bad language within the movie.  The movie overall creates suspense and shock. I want the audience to feel shocked towards spencer’s death as just before this happens we a provided with long and short takes which increase the tempo and create tension. In my opinion I believe people will be shocked by Spencer’s death because he doesn’t do anything in the film wrong to be made out to be the bad guy. That is until Anthony tells all the characters the truth about Spencer.

Whist filming, I made a variety of different camera shots. Ranging from long shots to extreme close-ups. In my opinion my favorite camera angle is the tracking shot I filmed. This is because it creates mystery and it makes the audience wonder who is entering the room. Then after this character walks in we are provided with a panning shot of this character. The panning shot is from the feet upwards to reveal the character. The reveal of the character makes the scene seem mysterious. This angle introduces spencer and reveals what sort of a character it is. Also, I used a few over the shoulder shots for effect. I used them so I could make the audience feel as though they are a part of the film in some sorts of aspects.  While filming I also used a boom mic and a tripod. This was to ensure that all my camera angles were up to scratch and were of a high quality. The tripod was used to jeep things like close ups at a steady level.  The boom mic was used so multiple characters could be heard clearly and smoothly.

During the editing phase of my production I decided that I wanted to use fades, and wipes as well as jump cuts. This was so I could experiment to see which ones made my film more successful and better to watch both in quality and quantity. I also did this so I could show the audience that the shots are clean cuts. As well as that they are of a high quality. These effects also show that the gang leaders are powerful and born leaders of the community.

Business meeting

Interview

Mock Interview

My mock interview went well in my opinion.  Some of the things that went well as my attitude towards the employer of the radio station. This went well in my opinion as I was confident when I went into the room. I was a little nervous at first, but the employer was friendly and kind. As well as understanding towards everything. Other things that went well was my knowledge and understanding about the media sector I was looking at (radio). This was important as some of the question was about the job roe and what I would need to do to succeed and climb the ladder to success.

Things that I could improve on was my nerves. I was nervous when I knew I shouldn’t have ben as the employer was so understanding and accepting. Another thing I could have done better was maybe extending some of my answers to questions instead of giving bunt answers to questions I was not too sure about. The last thing I could have improved on in my opinion would be the smoothness of the convocation. When I was talking to the employer/answering their questions. I was not as confident and fluent in the way I was speaking.

Affilliation Trailer

Trailer Edit

This is my trailer for my short film Affiliation. There for many different purposes intended for my film. One of my main purposes was too engage the audience by the tension and the way the film is set and shot. The cuts and film shots attract the audience in different ways.  The cuts are one of the main successes of my trailer. Short cuts helped me and attracts the audience because the more cuts used and the snappy the cuts are the more tension and attraction it brings for the audience watching. Also, short and quick cuts are used so it can up the tempo of the trailer also it shows the audience a snip or two of the film.

The genre I have decided to look at is Crime-Fiction. This is because I am interested in this genre as I love programs such as NCIS etc. Which also go for the Crime-Fiction genre. My age range for my target audience would be in my opinion 15-20-year old’s. This is because it includes violence and bad language.

While making my trailer I had many different intensions of the audience’s feelings/emotions. I wanted to feel interest and engagement. This is because if they did not feel these emotions my trailer would be pointless. Also, I wanted the audience to feel tension and suspense. In this trailer there is definitely enough clips that imply suspense and tension. Referring back to my trailer i created suspense because of the way I created short and snappy cuts which makes the audience hang on to the trailer to the end and makes them wanted to watch the movie. Whist watching the trailer the audience are presented with a cliff hanger. This also creates suspense and tension for the audience.

I included many different editing techniques within my trailer. I used the technique jump cut to jump from the dramatic music playing in the background to a title saying “10 Years Ago” this is dramatic for the audience as it makes them want to know what happens next. My creative purpose of this was to make it as good as possible and for everyone to enjoy the trailer and to be engaged and interested ad I believe that I have succeeded with this objective.

Teeside Uni Evaluation

We went to Teeside Uni to get some advice and guidance on how we could proceed and what steps we could take next in our future paths/careers. For the first couple of hours we had a conference talk with two journalists. These different journalists were from different backgrounds and had different journalism jobs. one of these people was a freelancer and the other was a working journalist working for The Lad Bible. We found out that there is many different pros and cons to working in both freelance and working for a company such as Lad Bible.

Some of the pros of working for a company is that you get a gaurenteed pay as well as a fixed pay. If you show that you can work hard as well as show your true potential you will succeed up the ladder. I found out that one of the journalists who worked for LadBible got to experience interviewing famous Celebrities and famous Footballers. I found out that this journalist was working for the company for about 3-5 years before he proceeded up the ladder. He got the chance to interview people like Zidane Zidane, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, James Arthur etc. Some of the cons to this job is that you are working 6 days a week. these days are also, long days 9-5 shift. Also i got told that another negative of this job role is that you get negative people all the time. giving you criticism for anything you write or something you do. you get people being nasty to you as the writer just for4 the sake of being nasty. Sometimes there is no reason for the negativity.

Then we spoke to the other Journalist who was a Freelancer. This job was more complicated that i thought. There is many pros and cons to this job. I learned in Freelance that you need to stand out to the audience as there is lots and lots of freelancers out there. Also you need to pitch a story and create another story and pursuade them that they need to hear it.

Then later on in the afternoon we went into a talk with more journalist. Journalists from the BBC and Smooth radio. In my opinion these were the better Journalists as they were more inspiring and more assertive in the way they were speaking to us. They were talking to us about how they climbed the ladder to get where they are now and what opportunities they were able to take. One of these journalists were saying they were right at the bottom of the ladder and her manager asked if someone would cover a specific famous event and she arose to the challenge and covered this event. Which then led onto more opportunities as she did a good job.

So overall I learned quite a bit about Journalism and the different kinds of this specific media sector for example pros and cons of different kinds of journalism. Different job roles and how to succeed up the ladder of Journalism.
